Koons Tysons Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram compares the all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL generation to the former Wrangler JK

We don't need to tell hardcore Jeep enthusiasts why this is an exciting year for the brand, but in case you don't know, the Jeep Wrangler received a redesign for 2018! Yes, after 10 years there is finally a new generation on the market and you'll find a great selection to choose from here at Koons Tysons Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, located in Vienna, VA. This new generation is known as the JL, and for at least the 2018 model year we'll also be selling the old generation (known as the JK) alongside it.

If you like having the newest things, going with the JL is the obvious choice, but we'll still do our due diligence and let you know what's different on the new generation so you can decide between the two. Ready to compare 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL to the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK? Then let's go!

Body & Interior Style

The Jeep Wrangler is so iconic that designers need to be extra mindful when developing the next generation. If you were to glance at a JL driving down an Alexandria street, you wouldn't notice a huge difference right off the bat and that's intentional. Upon closer inspection, though, the changes are (delightfully) apparent.

The 7-slot grille: this iconic grille screams "Jeep" and on the JL it now has a notable kink in the center, compared to the JK's grille that is essentially flat. That angle isn't just for aesthetics either. It also helps with aerodynamics.

Side vents: new for the JL are vents which you'll notice next to the front fenders. Engineers developed these to help with air circulation and engine cooling. You'll also get less road noise so you can really enjoy travels on or off the pavement.

The roof: With the hardtop you can now remove the panels, while still maintaining the roof. There's also a soft top (sans the zippers of the past) and even a powertop! If you have the wiggle room in your budget, we highly suggest going for the power option, but either way it'll be easier to enjoy the wind in your face while driving around Arlington.

Little touches: also new for the JL are unique and square LED lights on the back, updated door handles, and a notable character line going down the side to give it a more sculpted look.

Interior refinement: the JK Wrangler used to be a little more barebones and utilitarian on the inside. The JL has more buttons, nobs, and read outs. That said, it still has a rugged feel and power, and the engine specs below back that up.

Engine Lineup

The Jeep Wrangler JK only had one engine. Now two more are coming to the lineup and there's rumor of another.

  • 3.6L Pentastar V6: 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque (carried over from the previous model, but slightly updated for a bit more power and efficiency)
  • 2.0L Turbocharged: 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque (nickname: the "Hurricane." All-new!)
  • 3.0L EcoDiesel V6: 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque (due to arrive in 2019)

There's also talk of a plug-in electric for 2020, which would be a promising option for those who plan to use the Wrangler more for commuting on the Washington, DC pavement than going off-roading.

Even though the JL and JK will be sold together, they won't be priced the same. If you're watching your budget, and don't need the new features, then the JK could be a great option with pricing that's around $2,500 to $3,000 less than the new generation.  If you're still on the fence, come in and meet with our financing team. They'll run the numbers and help get you into the Wrangler model you really want!
